The MLK 50 Year Celebration Scholarship was established in 2024 by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Team Committee and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Board of Trustees to provide funds to two (2) financially deserving local students who, through their words and actions, embody the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s teachings on peace, racial harmony, community service and bettering the lives of others.

Overview:

The scholarship will be administered by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Team Committee. Scholarship funds will be awarded to seniors in the 2024 graduating classes of Muskogee High School and Hilldale High School and funds will be sent directly to the educational institution that the recipient will be attending. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded in 2024.

Selection Criteria:

Eligible students are seniors graduating in May 2024 from Muskogee Public School who demonstrate a financial need for the scholarship funds. Students must have completed a minimum 20 hours community service in the past four years. Awards will be made without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin.
Preference will be given to students who attended the Dream Team after School or Summer Learning programs in elementary school, and to students who are currently engaged in an act of humanity or community service that touches the lives of one or more persons. This must be verified in writing by a teacher, guidance counselor, or clergy.

Required Documents:

All required documents listed below must be submitted with the application.

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Students who are interviewed will be required to verify financial need.
*Completed application form.
*Current transcript or report card.
*Proof of acceptance to college, university or technical school.
*2 signed letters of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, and/or clergy.
*A brief essay (500 words or less) explaining: why the scholarship is important to you, your goals for the future, and how the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and/or the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center has inspired you and/or impacted your life.

Submission Instructions and Timeline:

All application materials must be submitted by 5:00pm April 29, 2024. Late applications will not be accepted. Applications may be submitted by email to bbeasley@nbn-nrc.org or submit all application materials by April 29, 2024 in person at the Muskogee MLK Community Center, 300 MLK St., Muskogee, OK 74401.
Winners will be announced May 4th at the MLK 50th Year Celebration Gala and students notified thereafter.
